The fauna of Ibiza, a little known marvel

Dear traveller,

I’m quite sure that when you come to Ibiza, you don’t do it for its wildlife. You travel because of its the sun, its beaches and its night-life. But, as I’ve already told you, with my fairy wings I often go for a walk to explore the island. And I’ve stumbled upon animals both on land and in the water that you can’t miss when you come to Ibiza.

I know, in Vinya den Palerm, I have my farm with rabbits, sheep and chickens … but I’ve realized that the wildlife of Ibiza is much more than that! So I’m going to share with you my favourite animals on the island.

You’ve surely seen them if you’ve already been in Ibiza. Lizards or sargantanas can be seen everywhere. This small invertebrate hides wherever there are walls, stones or rocks. They come in various colours, depending on where they live in the Pitiuses. Thus, in the sands of Formentera they are almost white, whereas in Ibiza, you can find them green, blue or multicoloured. And it is the only autochthonous land animal on the island! Due to their substantial presence and typical character they have become the icon and symbol of Ibiza and Formentera, so you won’t be able to resist taking back home a souvenir, key chain or magnet decorated with a lizard.

When you come to Ibiza on holidays, one thing you must do is a tour of the Natural Park of Ses Salines. There, depending on the season, you can observe the flamingos standing in the water ponds. From August to autumn they just stop in the island; in winter they settle down for a few months in Salinas before migrating to France and Southern Spain. Besides the flamingos, there are more than 100 other species of birds in the Natural Park. I’ve sometimes tried to follow the eagles but their turns make me dizzy so I stay in the ponds with my favourite pink birds.

This dog is another phenomenon of the island, honoured as such with several sculptures. It is a slim dog with a very fine ear making it a hunting hero. Acting as a team, and with its agility, it manages to corner the prey to be hunted. Luckily I have wings to fly into the trees to escape. It is a redoubtable hunter and, truth be told, I would not care to be a rabbit.

As for the marine fauna of Ibiza, I have to mention my friends the dolphins; if you’re lucky you can see them in a day trip by boat or from the beach. They always travel in groups and are sometimes confused with porpoises or sea-hogs, a little smaller. I’ve always dreamed of having fins … but I already have wings, and you can’t have it all, can’t you?So when I come to surprise a family, I have to stay appreciating them from above. A rare and wonderful spectacle.
